The Short List: The Best Trends for Fall 2009

I’ve just gone through all of my fashion magazines for about the third time this month. I was searching for the best of the trends for Fall 2009, but about halfway through this thought kept buzzing around my head…

…”Is now the time to be following trends?”

Blasphemy, you cry!!

Oh get over it!!  I’ve seen plenty of trends go awry in the wardrobes of those less adept at putting outfits together, and this season is more confusing than ever with regard to what’s on trend and what’s not.

If you’ve read InStyle, Marie Claire, People’s StyleWatch, Lucky or any of the other fashion magazines lately it seems to be an “anything goes” kind of attitude. In fact, I’m finding contradictory information within the same magazine!

So I’ve decided to compile The Stylish Executive’s list (short but sweet!) of those items I think everyone needs to invest in for Fall 2009.  Which brings me to my next point…

…Don’t feel like you have to spend a ton to pull off some of these looks. I get tired of seeing “chic cheap” article titles full of pieces retailing at $300 and up. Honestly, who are they speaking to? There’s nothing chic about spending too much money just to get a look.

My advice to you on price is this: Spend your money when you know you’ll keep the item for several seasons/years. If it’s uber trendy, then find less expensive versions at H&M or Target and pair them with better pieces for on-trend outfits that won’t break your budget.

The latest test I put something through is simple: Does it play well with others? Meaning, does what I’m looking at buying work to update at least 2 other items in my closet, or is it forcing me to make yet another purchase to pull off?

So create your own shopping rules, KNOW what is already in your closet, determine a budget and get thee to the nearest mall to find your perfect version of these five Stylish Executive’s must-haves for Fall:

platform pumps1. Something Tall

Pick from tall knee high boots or platform pumps, either which way (or both!) you’ll soar to new heights with these styles for Fall. From buckles to rouching, tall boots are back and stronger than ever with fun details this season…and there is a style for everyone.

For platform pumps, find a pair in a new neutral like gray that will instantly update every dress in your closet. Don’t be scared of the height; keep in mind that your entire foot is off the ground by 1/2″ – 1″, so that 4″ heel will actually only feel like 3″ to your foot. I love the idea that I can non-surgically grow my legs by 4″ by slipping on a pair!!

jeweled necklace2. Something Sparkly.

A handbag, necklace, shoes…anything that is jeweled will add a serious “wow” factor to your outfit. Bejeweled shoes are everywhere and gorgeous multi-layered or multi-stone statement necklaces are easy to find.

One or two of these items will make you feel gorgeous every time you put it on and are much easier to wear than you might think.  Just remember to keep any other jewelry you wear to a minimum to really let your special piece be the center of attention.

trench coat3. Something Colorful.

Classic khaki trenches are always on trend, but this Fall go for a fabulous coat in a wild color. Bright raspberry, regal plum, splashy orange…pick your fruit, I mean your color and have fun with it.

Not that you have to wear black every day, but if you really want to make a statement with your new coat, keep the outfit underneath a little more subdued…and whatever you do, don’t let it clash!!

white shirt4. Something Embellished.

Moving past the ruffles of last season, for Fall the runways were full of over-the-top layers of pleated ruffles embellished with ribbons and flowers in a very Queen Elizabeth meets Gwyneth Paltrow kind of way.

They’re so flirty, feminine and extra fabulous when exploding out over the lapel of a fitted blazer (extra points for wearing it with the boots from “something tall”!!). If that’s a bit too much for you, try something draped or rouched, the concept behind taking a simple form and turning it into something fabulous.

day dress5. Something Easy.

Easy as in an outfit that is slip on and go.  Does it really exist?  But of course!  One of the best trends of the past few years is the day dress, a one-piece wonder of simplicity!!

The key here is to find a dress (or two) that will give you some versatility, such as a sheath style that can be worn on it’s own for warmer days, or layered under a cardigan or fitted jacket for cooler temps.  And be sure to find styles that flatter your body type.  I might recommend that you have one solid color and one in a bold pattern. You’ll be surprised at how many different looks you’ll be able to pull off with those two items.

And because I can’t resist, I’ve added a sixth item to my personal list. Not really for work, it’ll be my weekend standby: the perfect leather jacket. It’s one of those items that I’ve been craving now for a while, and suddenly this season I’m seeing them everywhere. I figure that means my chances of finding “the one” are much greater. Perhaps I’ll convince my hubby that he needs to buy another motorcycle so I can justify it that much more!
